presented by Audiophile Club of Athens / 24 August 1998 (revised on 19 February 2000)

Audiophile Club of Athens dedicated in Hi Fidelity, with this Audio... Paper, want to express their views about analogue versus digital sound credibility.

Technical matters

Have you noticed the fact that if a " hi-fi car", I should say a "car hi-fi", passes by, you and the drivers of neighboring cars with their windows open, are listening lower notes better than the car driver himself and you are wondering "how on earth this guy can stand this noise?"...

Well, he does not listen these deep notes. You are exposed in the open air with unlimited space (unlimited wavelength) and so you are able to listen the lowest notes produced, which ...

So what possessed you to build a dedicated room?

Back in 1994, I got into this hobby on a serious level. I had always enjoyed music and back in High School (the '60s) and College (early '70s) I had a 'Stereo System' that was semi-serious... at first a Wollensack reel to reel tape recorder (bedroom in parent's home), then AR speakers, Sansui receiver, and ...

One mistake I made when purchasing the Martin Logan 'Odysseys' was not to audition them in my home. Nasty surprises were awaiting me after positioning them as best as I could, as follows (all frequency references are to a 1kHz tone):

    * A nasty +6dB peak at the crossover frequency of 250Hz.

    * A nasty dip of -4dB at 100Hz.

    * A horrible +14dB peak/resonance at 50Hz that most rooms suffer from.

After many months of thinking, I decided to rearrange the room furniture a bit ...

Analogue, digital, video and surround Sound - a rant on software etc.

by John Coulson (see his high-end system...) / entered on 31-Dec-01, revised on 15-Mar-03

First let me make it clear the position I am coming from. I collected about 3,000 LP's from the 1950's up until the 1980's and my first taste of digital was not good. I resisted purchase of CD's until seduced by a CD of a 'Welsh choir' performance from the same group we had witnessed ...
